CSC 463: Self-Directed Learning: Advanced CS Topics: 3 hours


Students will pick one advanced cutting edge topic (typically cloud computing, machine learning, big data, Internet of things, or mobile computing), develop their own learning goals and strategies, get them approved and learn the material on their own. Students will be required to develop a project to demonstrate what they have learned. Can be taken up to 2 times as long as the topic is different. Topics must also differ from those taken in CSC 410. One lecture a week. Prerequisite: (CSC 261, CSC 262, or CSC 263) and permission of the instructor

Upon complete of CSC 463 students will know:

  • how to direct their own self learning for future tasks
  • how to demonstrate the ideas they have learned
  • how to identify security and ethical issues in a topic of their own choosing.

Program outcomes for CSC 463 are:

  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  3. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal, ethical, and moral principles.
  4. Learn new areas of technology

Course Content

  1. Each week, please email me a progress report that includes the following
    • Your name (of course)
    • What were your plans for the week
    • What you actually accomplished for the week
    • What are your plans for next week
    • At least three things you learned on your project
    • At least one secondary thing you learned
  2. Each week we will meet on a scheduled zoom meeting for 30-50 minutes (all of us) to talk about what we are learning. During this time I hope to learn many new things from you. We will also discuss any problems you might be having and possible solutions for those problems.
  3. At the end of the first week, you are to turn in (via email) a complete learning plan that includes milestones and artifacts. When an artifact is finished, it is also to be turned in. The deadlines for the artifacts are determined by your timeline. If you need to adjust your time, you need to resubmit it before you implement the changes
  4. At the end of the course you are to turn in a paper outlining what you have learned.
  5. You are to also present what you have learned in the fall seminar course.


Your grades are made up of:

  1. Your weekly reports -> 10%
  2. Your intermediate artifacts -> 10%
  3. How well you kept to your time line -> 10%
  4. How well you participated in the weekly meeting -> 10%
  5. Your final report -> 60%

    • 90% <= average < 93% -> A-
    • 87% <= average < 90% -> B+
    • 83% <= average < 87% -> B
    • 80% <= average < 83% -> B-
    • 77% <= average < 80% -> C+

    • 70% <= average < 73% -> C-
    • 67% <= average < 70% -> D+
    • 63% <= average < 67% -> D
