Being on Time
What does "on time" mean?
It means being in your seat and ready to learn. If you are using a computer, you are logged in, the application you are using is launched, etc. If you are taking notes by hand, you have paper and pen/pencil ready to go. If there is homework to turn it, it has been turned in before you sat down. All this means you are probably in your seat a couple of minutes before the class starts.
Why is it vital
Being to class on time
- It shows respect for the professor and your classmates.
- In Dr. Bareiss' classes, it is common to make assignments and other important things in the beginning of class. She does not like to repeat things just because people are late
- Arriving late can be disruptive to what is happening at that time.
- Things might have to be delayed because not everyone has arrived. Everyone may need to wait on you. This is not good.
Being to other meetings on time
- It shows respect for everyone else in the meeting.
- You are not wasting everyone else's time.
- You are not wasting your time by having to go back and get the information you missed.
Guidelines on how to do it
This depends on the type of person you are.
- Being on time needs to be a priority to you.
- Occasionally being late is not a problem. In these few instances, just come in quietly so that you that you do not disrupt class. Try to get what you missed from a classmate. If that is not possible, see the instructor after class.
- If there is a legitimate reason for being late regularly (such as a class right before where the instructor always keeps you five minutes late), inform your professor of this and make arrangements with a classmate to get what is missed. Also don't disrupt class when you arrive.
- If you struggle with being on time, then fix it now and don't wait until you start your career. Establish a good habit when it is easier. Talk with the professor about this.
Requirements for credit
- Describe how well prepared you are at the start of class (refer to what it means to be on time). What things do you do well, and what things do you not do well? Why?
- Identify at least two specific things you can do to improve in this area. Try them for two weeks. Report on your success and/or failure.
