Note Taking
Why is it vital
There are a number of reasons why you need to have very good note taking skills.
- They are essential on the job when you graduate. You will be in meetings and will need to have the details of things said. These are rarely recorded for you. You need to be able to record them as you participate in the meeting!
- They are very valuable when doing homework and programming. The things said in class often apply directly to the assignments.
- They are very valuable when studying for the exams.
- In the process of recording important thoughts, you learn them better. Recording is an act of studying.
- They can keep you engage in class.
Guidelines on how to do it
- Thoughts from Dr. Bareiss:
- It takes a lot of practice. Don't give up or say you can't. You can't only if you don't practice a lot.
- I am very grateful when students ask me to slow down or pause because they are working on notes! So are your classmates!
- If I am writing code, I am often saving it. Therefore you don't need to record the entire programs → just some lines and the important thoughts. You can get the entire code later!
